The Netty Awards

2023 has come and gone, but it brought with it some truly groundbreaking marketing campaigns that captivated worldwide audiences with their creativity. The Netty Awards team took a deep dive into the best campaigns – here’s our top five!

1. The Barbie Movie Campaign by Warner Bros. and Mattel:
Unless you took a few month break from the internet in 2023, you’ll have seen this campaign. No expense was spared for this innovative and far-reaching campaign for the “Barbie” movie, which included a range of experiential activations and product collaborations. One of the most notable features was the Airbnb listing of Ken’s Malibu Dreamhouse, which created a real-world connection to the Barbie universe. Additionally, the campaign included Barbie-themed products in collaboration with brands like Crocs, Xbox, BEIS, and Homesick Candles, thereby extending the campaign’s reach across various consumer segments. Who could forget the “Barbenheimer” moniker with Oppenheimer debuting the same weekend, organically amplifying the already significant impact. The integration of multiple marketing channels and the leverage of Barbie’s iconic status made this campaign a huge success and the clear winner of 2023

2. Snoop Dogg and Solo Stove Partnership:
In a year full of surprises, one of the largest was a cryptic social post from Snoop Dogg proclaiming that he is “giving up smoke”. After sending the internet into a frenzy over the weekend, he revealed this was part of a collaboration with Solo Stove, a brand selling smokeless fire pits with Snoop as their official “Smokesman”. The campaign, put together by The Martin Agency, brilliantly played on Snoop Dogg’s personal brand to highlight the unique selling proposition of Solo Stove’s products, demonstrating the power of celebrity influence in brand marketing.

3. Dove’s Embracing Real Beauty Campaign:
Dove’s campaign continued its mission of challenging conventional beauty standards and promoting body positivity. In 2023, Dove took significant steps by launching campaigns that focused on real beauty, self-esteem, and the impact of social media on body image. These campaigns stood out for their authenticity and commitment to a positive message, resonating deeply with audiences globally. Dove’s consistent focus on genuine representation and its stand against digitally altered beauty standards reinforced its position as a brand that champions real beauty.

4. Nicki Minaj’s “Gag City” Campaign:
The “Gag City” campaign revolved around the launch of Nicki Minaj’s album “Pink Friday 2.” The term “Gag City” became a rallying point for Minaj’s fanbase, known as the Barbz, who used AI to generate pink cityscape images inspired by the album’s cover art. This resulted in a widespread, organic marketing movement that promoted the album across digital platforms. The campaign exemplified the power of fan engagement and the innovative use of generative AI in marketing, showcasing how a strong fanbase can be mobilized to create a viral marketing phenomenon.

5. Heinz and Absolut Vodka Joint Campaign:
Heinz and Absolut Vodka joined forces for a campaign, spearheaded by Wunderman Thompson Spain, just before April Fools that left the internet feeling like they were being pranked. Penne alla Vodka and Bloody Mary fans had their dreams come true with Heinz and Absolut partnering to create vodka-infused pasta sauce and a Bloody Mary mix. The campaign really stuck out with mouth-watering visuals and innovative recipe ideas, captivating social media audiences. A number of social media creators got involved with their videos going viral, receiving millions of views on TikTok and generating countless engagement. This campaign proved both the power of brand collaborations and how impactful individual creators can be in this new social media age.

Each of these campaigns demonstrated a unique approach to modern marketing. From leveraging celebrity influence and embracing fan-generated content to advocating for social causes and utilizing innovative technologies, these campaigns reflected an in-depth understanding of contemporary audiences. They also highlighted the brands’ abilities to adapt to and thrive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, setting new standards for what is possible in the realm of advertising and marketing.
